The Housing Prices Challenge: Hands-On Machine Learning In Practice

The Housing Prices Challenge: Hands-On Machine Learning In Practice

In the world of real estate, buying a home isn't just a transaction — it's a life-altering decision that can define families, futures, and finances.

The Housing Prices Challenge invites you to decode what drives property value, using hands-on machine learning.

As the new season of our Getting Started series, this beginner-friendly adventure empowers AI enthusiasts to build predictive models, and it is perfect for aspiring data scientists ready to tackle regression in a meaningful way.

What’s Our Objective?

This challenge isn't abstract theory — it's a dive into actionable AI for the property world.

You'll learn by doing:

  • Think like a data scientist: Explore rich housing data to spot patterns and features that sway values.
  • Experiment with machine learning: Test algorithms from linear regression to ensemble methods.
  • Master regression modeling: Use real property listings to forecast prices and refine your approach.

By the end, you'll have a competitive model and the confidence to apply it beyond the challenge.

How Does the Challenge Work?

Designed for builders at any level, the challenge enhances your skills step by step.

Your core mission:

→ Predict the final sale price of a house based on features like area, number of bedrooms, property type, location, and more.

→ Train on labeled data, validate your model, and generate predictions for unseen properties.

→ Submit your predictions to see your score on the Public Leaderboard — iterate endlessly to climb the ranks and learn from the community.

How Submissions Are Evaluated

Performance is measured by Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) on log-transformed prices — lower is better, rewarding precise predictions across price ranges. The log transformation levels the playing field, ensuring fairness whether forecasting a budget apartment or a mansion.

Submission Format

Submit a CSV with a header row in this format:

  • id: Corresponds to House_index in test.csv
  • price: Your predicted (log-transformed) sale price

What Are the Rules of the Challenge? (Important)

We prioritize fair play and open collaboration:

  • One account per participant.
  • No private sharing of code or datasets — keep it public for community learning.
  • A maximum of five submissions per day to encourage thoughtful iterations.

Violations may lead to disqualification, but we're here to support your success!

Challenge Timeline

  • Start Date: October 15th, 2025
  • Entry Deadline: Endless — join anytime!
  • End Date: Endless — refine indefinitely.
